bearing no real one to one correspondence with the tangible world other than to create a reality that reminds one of something special.
The viewer is drawn into the motion of a dynamic background. No vanishing point directs their gaze in one direction only. Rather, the eye is guided by a colour trail or shape recognition game through the picture. Multi-coloured shapes in delightful interplay help the eye run around the canvas. The forms suggest images, joys and memories which are individualized by the viewer. Wheeling fragmented forms make the best backgrounds because they have the feel of a kaleidoscope which always appeals to the child in us.

The empty air around an object is an important part of the object, as it gives it space to be in. It is necessary to, at least, hint at this empty air in painting by suggesting you are looking at objects that could move through the space they are in. Thus revolving geometric shapes are painted in multiple, delicate colours which appear to be floating and so create a sense of depth and an illusion of space that has just enough rich confusion to tantalize the eye. Space is further indicated by simple overlapping, by showing many planes of an object on one unifying plane and by having light and shade from more than one source, as is the case with artificial light since the invention of electricity.
Reshaping nature for your own reasons, to see what kind of decorative patterns you can come up with inside a frame, allows you to create a world of shape and colour that expresses imagination and feeling. By dissolving and reappearing rhythmically, the shapes give movement to this background and thus a life space for the central figure or figures to live in. What better purpose could a background have?
