24" x 30" Oil - R.V. Harms 1994
There is a haunting sense of melodrama. Three staring birds and a beautiful questioning woman in a garden at the beginning of time.
If Eve had taken her case to court there is little doubt that her defence could have been entrapment.
Even before Eve knew whether there was right or wrong, the Trinity was there. But they said nothing until the act was completed. Then they pronounced judgment, "Work by the sweat of your brow, give birth in pain and death." How unfair, how could Eve know the nature and quality of her act, unless she had knowledge of good and evil, which she didn't get until she picked the fruit?
Or was the real original sin perhaps Eve's getting Adam to sin after she knew what sin was? If so, Adam was fooled into committing his crime. I think the whole affair should be declared a mistrial.
